Decoration Day? Memorial Day was first used in 1882. It did not become common until after World War II. Wasn't official by Federal Law until 1967
On June 28th 1968 the US Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill which moved three holidays from their traditional dates to a specified Monday
in order to create a convenient 3 day weekend! We love Politicians! The holidays included Washington's Birthday {now Presidents' Day}, Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery
During the first celebration of Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery.
In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May.
